The area of Ubud, and especially Padangtegal and Tebesaya, is specialized in the painting of Balinese life. Stylistically, the school is strongly influenced by the anatomic manner of Rudolf Bonnet. The best living painters are Nyoman Madia, Nyoman Meja, Ketut Budiana, Kista, Jujul, Jumun, and Rury based at Jalan Hanoman.
Near Ubud, the village of Peliatan has developed, under the influence of the Dutch Fauvist painter Arie Smit, a colorful style of its own. Its main artists are Ngurah K.K., Londo, Tembles Cakra, Tagen and Soki.
The small hamlet of Pengosekan, to the south of Ubud, specializes in colorful paintings of natural life. Its main artists are Mokoh, Dewa Nyoman Batuan, but many more wonderful artists may be visited in the village.
The village of Lod Tunduh, south of Ubud, is famed for its Genta Fine Art Gallery. Many masterpieces can be found here.
A The village of Batuan, though, is arguably where the best Balinese paintings is produced in the form of Chinese ink miniatures. The best artists are Wayan Rajin, Ketut Murtika, Dewa Putu Kantor in nearby Sukawati. Wayan Bendi and Ketut Budi make paintings that blend village life and modernity-with cars, surfing, war, etc.
Margi House of Fine Art, located in Jimbaran, is the residence of the famous painter I Nyoman Sukadana. His painting themes revolve around Bali, especially its people, panorama, society and culture. |
